Friends of the Arts recognized that schools in this area found it difficult to travel to cultural centers for the arts. Our decision was to bring the Arts directly into the schools. Our mission today remains the same. Th is message and the program descriptions herein, includes what we feel to be one of our strongest seasons yet. We look forward to working with you in 2010 – 2011!

The program, formerly named Art Encounters Education for Schools, started with just one school in 1973. Today our programs are off ered to more than 54 schools reaching over 8,500 students each year.

Artist in Residency Programs

Eco-Art Programs

Friends of the Arts is offering in-school Artist in Residency programs throughout the year, including Eco-Artist Cynthia Robinson, who will be offering programs for grade K through 8, which include:

  • Nature Shelters (for grades pre K-1)Creating spaces for animal and insect neighbors. This workshop is designed for an introduction to collaboration in art making. We begin with a storybook identifying many animal characters, and we discuss the kinds of homes local animals need. Proceeding outside, we then work in pairs or small groups to construct homes from natural materials.

  • Art Trailworks! (for grades 2-8) Create a walk though Art Trail, with individual or group sculptures. Using an existing path (or an indoor space), this project engages students in the process of planning an experience of their landscape. Students will plan and build sculptures, made of local natural materials, which could include features for resident creatures.

Arts Around the World – Fine Art Activities from around the World…

The Friends of the Arts are pleased to announce our newest Artist in Residency program, ‘Arts Around the World’, focusing on the fine arts and exciting multicultural explorations. Offered as a ninety-minute program, and starting this fall, the Arts Around the World program highlights three distinct program areas or activities from around the globe…

  • from Mexico…Huichol Yarn Painting
  • from Australia…Aboriginal Skeleton Art
  • from Asia…Mandala Making

The cost for this program is offered as either a half-day or full-day rate, with the half-day rate at $150 and the fullday rate at $285. We can accommodate groups of up to 25 students and can tailor our curriculum to meet your group or schools present needs.
