2009-2010 Program Book Sponsors
We would like to thank all the local businesses who supported our efforts in the 2009-2010 season to bring our second annual program book to our schools and community.
Starting THIS Summer
Arts Around the World – Fine Art Activities from around the World…
The Friends of the Arts are pleased to announce our newest outreach program, ‘Arts Around the World’, focusing on the fine arts and exciting multi-cultural explorations…
Offered as a ninety-minute program, and starting this summer, the Arts Around the World program highlights three distinct program areas or activities from around the globe
* from Mexico… Huichol Yarn Painting
Take a step onto the western coast of Mexico… There we will meet the indigenous Huichol Indian tribe. The Huichol are famous for their intricately designed yarn paintings. These works of art represent every walk of life from the annual corn crop to the Huichol rain Goddess. Students will create their own yarn painting from a variety of colored yarn, while understanding the basic principles of pattern and textural elements. Lets go to the mountains of Mexico, as we all produce a wonderful piece of personalized artwork.
* from Australia… Aboriginal Skeleton Art
Of the land of down-under... we introduce Australia. The vast continent of lush rainforest and the bone dry desert of Kangeroo country. Students will learn about the rich Aboriginal culture through the eyes of the artists themselves. Taking a closer look at dreamtime, aerial view and skeleton art, students will demonstrate the use of color and design elements, as they complete their own Aboriginally-inspired artwork.
* from Asia… Mandala Making
Students will learn the history of a Mandala and how they are used in every day life. A Mandala is a Sanskrit word meaning "circle" or "whole world". Mandalas are symbols of universal energy, and they are used in Buddhism and in Native American tribes. They are used as symbols of meditation, protection and healing. Most of the time sand is used to create a traditional Mandala. Students will create their own Mandala through a variety of color, symmetrical, and radial patterns. This is an opportunity for the student to take a closer look into the history and many different styles of a Mandala.
The cost for this program is offered as either a half-day or full-day rate, with the half-day rate at $150 and the full-day rate at $285. We can accommodate groups of up to 25 students and can tailor our curriculum to meet your camp or schools present needs. We have a wonderful team of educators, and can work directly with your staff to offer the best program we can provide.
